End of US Military in Iraq

After 9+ years the US military is leaving Iraq. Feel free to comment on the article on today's announcement by Leon Panetta. Keep comments text based and don't just go on an emotional rant please.

  1. I think it is good that we are finally pulling all of our people out of the middle east. The conflict in the middle east has ben going on for a good portion on my life and its almost hard to belive that it is finally coming to the end. In the article it mentions that Iraq is in for some tough times and i think that is very true. We will have to wait and see if the middle east can govern itself and solve its own problems without US involvement. Overall i think it is for the better that we have finally left the midlle east.

  2. From the article, I feel that the Iraqi people are glad that the U.S. is leaving their land, they seem to hate the U.S. rather than being appreciative. Yes, we kept the insurgence in check, but now that we are leaving, there is nothing that they wont do to try to bring down the government. Then there are the religious war between two different beliefs of the Muslim religion, this will further bring the nation down. Even though the U.S. is done in Iraq, we are not done with the Middle East, we are still ocupying Afghanistan, and we might even go to war with Iran in the near future. It's very shocking to think that the Fertile Crescent is where human civilization started, and thousands of years later, we are fighting eachother there, maybe that's where we will end.

  3. I think its a good thing that the U.S is leaving Iraq. It seems like they were real glad that were finally leaving. It was disrespectful burning the U.S flag. Like it said in the article, the U.S will be there to stand by the Iraq people. So whenever anything serious goes on, we will be there to help. I think it was worth going to Iraq in the first place because we changed them. If it wasn't for the U.S armed forces they would be way worse then what the started out.

  4. Almost 4,500 US soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis lost their lives in the war that began with a " Shock and Awe " almost nine years ago. The US soldiers lowered the flag of American Forces in Iraq to send the 4,000 remaining troops home by the end of the year. Now instead of having war, the U.S. will be standing by the Iraq people when anything serious goes on. Even though we have soldiers leaving Iraq we are not done in the middle east, we still have soldiers fighting Afghanistan. Hopefully the fighting of eachother will end at the Fertile Crescent where human civilization started.

  5. Finally the troops in Iraq are coming home, and with that Iraqi citizens can rest knowing that their country can be opperated without the US troops. I'm sure that it is nice for the Iraqi people to hear "Challenges remain, but the United States will be there to stand by the Iraqi people." Even though the US is pulling soldiers out of Iraq doesn't mean that we are done in the Middle East. Our military still has to try and keep the Sunni and the Shi'ite muslims that have had an ongoing conflict for years. Only time will tell if these two cultures will ever agree. All we can do is wait and help with whatever we can. As I read futher I noticed that President Obama told the Iraqi Prime Minister that "Washington will remain a loyal partner after the last troops roll across the Kuwaiti border." Seeing as we have done so much for their homeland already I agree with the him to keep Iraq as an ally. Who knows it might come in handy someday, hopefully not but you never know. Iraqi citizens are torn about whether or not US troops leaving is good or bad. Samer Saad, a soccer coach, said "I am happy they are leaving. This is my country and they should leave." He also said "But I am worried because we need to be safe. We are worried because all the militias will start to come back." So even though our soldiers are out right now it doesn't mean we won't go back. Sargent 1st Class Lon Bennish said "Was it worth it? I'm sure it was. When we first came in here, the Iraqi people seemed like they were happy to see us." He also stated "I hope we are leaving behind a country that say 'Hey, we are better off now then we were before." And I think this goes from some fellow Americans also.

  6. I expected this article to be a simple informative article, yet I was surprised. The author seems to want to make a point that the U.S. military shouldn't have stayed in Iraq for so long. This is clearly seen by how the author chooses to provide the information. In the beginning of the article, he uses quotes from Iraqis celebrating the departure of troops. Quotes included phrases such as "'brutality of the Americans'" and statements that the Americans have '"destroyed the future.'" I usually don't mind some bias in informative articles-authors write with bias all the time. However, the author had so much bias in this article that I felt distracted from what I thought was supposed to be the main point- that the U.S. military was leaving Iraq and that there will continue to be conflicts (with religion and politics) in the future.

  7. i think it is good that us troops is leaving and finishing this unpopular war. this unpopular war costed 4500 us troops and tens of thousand Iraqi people lost their life.i am happy that this war is finally end, I think congress should not start a war with syria or other countries. we sick of wars and dont want death. i think Iraqi people will have more to do even us soldiers are left. one more thing i wanna talk about is burning us flag isnt good at all. i also think us congress shouldn't spend money for wars because all we want is world peace.

  8. Its a good thing that the U.S is finally leaving Iraq. The Iraqi people seemed to not want the U.S on their soil any longer, seeing as they burned the American flag as a celebration of the departure of the U.S troops. Even though the U.S is finally leaving Iraq, like it says in the article "Iraq will be tested in the days ahead, by terrorism, by those who would seek to divide, by economic and social issues," Panetta told the rows of assembled U.S. soldiers and embassy officials at the ceremony. "Challenges remain, but the United States will be there to stand by the Iraqi people." The first statement within that quote is true because after the American troops were withdrawn from Iraq, there have already been several terrorist bombing in Iraq. According to the article, the U.S will stand by Iraq in times of great trouble but lets hope the U.S doesn't need to send troops in again.

  9. This is great news on the U.S. because our troops are finally out of Iraq ending the most hated unnecessary venture of the U.S. military. 4,000 troops are home now and their families don’t have to worry no more. We as Americans should not be responsible for Iraq. It makes sense that their still going to struggle with their country and as well as economic issues. I am not our job to keep every country in order for we do have to work on our own country before we can do that. Though they were unhappy with us there but I’m sure they will be worried about their safety. At the same time it is nice knowing that our troops are home.

  10. President Obama fulfilled his promise he made to the nation. In 2008 he said he would poll the troops out of Iraq in which he did Thursday.  Tens of thousands of Iraqis lost their lives in the war but only about 4,500 U.S. soldiers died. Why did the U.S go to war with Iraq? Suddam Hussein made the world believe that he had WMD’s as a ploy to scare Iran from invading Iraq. He believed that the USA would never invade a secular Arab government for possessing them. The U.S knew all about those chemical and biological weapons because, it was the US that supplied this weaponry to him and when Iraq was at war with Iran he was helping the US. Saddam Hussien was found guilty for crimes against humanity which lead to his execution. After Saddam's death the city faced daily violences. The violences was between two Muslim groups , the Sunni and Shi'ite which has been going on for severals of years. Further along the article President Obama tells the Prime Minster "Washington will remain a loyal partner after the last troops roll across the Kuwaiti border" which is good. The Iraqi citizen were either unhappy or happy that the troops were finally leaving but other find it a good thing or bad, just like how there were some Iraqi's waving to the troops as they where leaving. “We are worried because all the militias will start to come back" said an Iraqi and it could be true , because they just might want the US to leave and once they leave they might take over again. The question finally comes down to "WAS IT WORTH IT?" well in “my opinion” I don't think it was worth it . Where the Iraqi's a threat ? Where there any nuclear weapons ? No, so there for it was not worth it . Was it worth it to have spent Three Trillion Dollars on a war that was not even a big war ? NO! That money could of went to the 15 Trillion that the US is in debt with.

  11. This was a big step for America! Our combat forces are almost out Iraq for good. 4,500 US soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis lost their lives in the war that began with a " Shock and Awe " about nine years ago. Not since Veitnam have we been out of such a pointless war.

  12. I finally took the time to read the article: Military marks end to nearly nine bloody years in Iraq. I believe that it was a positive affect that U.S troops had left Iraq. Iraqis didn't show any appreciation that the Americans that were there. Americans, although did make a difference for being there. But the article transformed the point expected of informing readers about the ending of the war to how the Iraqis were celebrating the farewell of Americans. But even though we have left Iraq, the troubles will continue via politics and religion. We still have not finished business with the Middle East. I hope soon, these conflicts will come to an end.

  13. This article seems to be more opinionated rather than a factoral artical. It clearly states the emotions behind the U.S. military not only being there but its duration there. "The Americans have left, but they left us for our sorrow, pains and destroyed the future." Its clear that the people of Iraq didnt want us there anymore."When we first came in here, the Iraqi people seemed like they were happy to see us,". When our troops first arrived they seemed welcomedaccording to the article but we wore out our welcome with our methods of freeing the Iraqi people from their government. The author points out their feeling of happiness of us leaving but also the hesitation they have for their safety once we are gone.

  14. I think the title says it all. American troops are finally leaving the blood filled Iraqi nation. The "war on terrorism" was the most unpopular war since Vietnam ans something obviously had to give. I think this is for the best interest for both countries becuase Iraq is now given the opportunity to try new things and run them the way they want to. Americans benefit for the obvious reasons of young individuals coming home safely. Looking back to the tradgedies of 9/11 we could almost all say that it was the right discission to go to war against terrorists. However, much like Vietnam, we learned that it is nearly imposssible to defeat an enemy you cannot see.

  15. Troops have been recently been able to leave iraq, this could be both good and bad. It's a good thing that the troops had left because most of them will be able to come back to the united states and hopefully see family members after being in the war with iraq for years. It also could be a bad thing because after the departure of the troops, terrorism could return back into the country and after all of the years the US troops have been there would just go to waste

  16. after alot of blood spilled by our troops and the Iraqis, our troops finally leave iraq. 4,5000 US soldiers died at iraq. The 4,000 will leave by the end of this year. US soldiers lowered the flag of American forces in Iraq and slipped it into a camouflage colored sleeve in a brief outdoor ceremony. Now that the war is over our troops can finally go back to their families and live in peace, yet our job is still not done due to all the insurgents and terrorist in iraq, and we still need to educate their government on how to be democratic.

  17. With the decision to finally leave the war the in Iraq this is a turning point for the better, no more deaths of both US soldiers and innocent civilians in Iraq. With the departure hopefully this will show congress and others that the war was pointless and that we never should have gone there in the first place. With an end, the troops can finally go and live with their family and friends in peace. This does not change the fact that there will always be a war on terrorism, but hopefully things will change for the better.

  18. It really bothers me that Iraq talks bad about the US coming into their country when they came into ours first. If they had never bombed the World Trade Center then we wouldn't have had to go into their country to fight. The Falluja also talk bad about the US and say that so many of their people got hurt and died, but so did our troops. They aren't the only ones is this "war" that have had loved ones die and have had to go through traumatic experiences. For people to say "Im happy their leaving. This is my country and they should leave." Why were you in our country in the first place? We wouldn't have even had to come over into yours.

  19. When reading this article, it is sad to see that 4,500 U.S. troops and thousands of Iraq's lost their lives while in this war. It is relieving to read that the rest of the 4,000 troops will be coming home. Troops leaving could mean that that is good or bad for some. Terrorism could return back into the country and after all of the years the US troops have been there would just mean that it's a waste. The good of it is that we know that the troops are safe and returned to loved ones.

  20. Almost 4,500 U.S. soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis lost their lives in the war. This article has its cons and pros the disadvantages are the many soldiers that have not made it out in Iraq. This could also be that the terrorist attacks may comeback in affect. The advantages are the troops will be home and safe.
